Becoming a member is as easy – just say “Yes, I want to join” when you’ve found the right club for you. Who can join Toastmasters? Anyone aged 18 years and over may join Toastmasters. There are "membership restricted" clubs which are sponsored and limited to employment with a particular organization, check with your employer - you may have a Toastmasters club where you work. There are also many "open" clubs with no affiliation requirement! How to try out Toastmasters Visit a club Visitors are most welcome at any Toastmasters meeting, and are always assured of a comfortable and warm visit. We realise that public speaking is a frightening thought for many people, and summoning up the courage to get to the first meeting is often the most difficult step - every Toastmaster had to walk through that door once. Visitors and propective members are encouraged to attend meetings at several clubs, to see the Toastmasters program in action, without any obligation. Clubs differ in size, culture, types of venues, meeting times and lengths, so "shopping around" is always a good idea to ensure that you find a club which suits you, your goals and your lifestyle. Do the Paperwork Download a membership form, fill it out and take it to the club you visit. Alternatively, just download it and have a look - most lubs are always keen to take on new members, and will have one of these handy for you to fill out at the meeting. Get a copy of Membership Form 400 directly from Toastmasters International or from the club you want to join. Pay the Membership Fee
Toastmasters, in comparison with various public speaking courses, seminars, programs, DVD and video kits,
is the least expensive and the most effective way to learn public speaking
and to develop confidence and self-esteem in the public arena. Membership fees vary from club to club since some clubs are sponsored or have access to free meeting faciltiies. Other clubs must budget dues to pay for the use of meeting rooms and other needed materials. All new members pay a once off joining fee of $US20 plus membership dues.
The membership dues are $US27, paid twice a year to remain an active Toastmaster. Once you have submitted your application form, the club you have chosen will then formally vote you into their club and accept your membership fee. Many clubs also conduct an induction ceremony, where you will be presented with your New Member's Kit. What is Included in the Membership Fee?You will receive as part of your membership:
Within a few weeks of joining, your New Member Kit will arrive from Toastmasters International. The kit will have your first communication manual of speech projects for you to prepare and present to your fellow club members. The kit will also include your first leadership manual of meeting and club activities that help you develop as a leader. You may work simultaneously on both manuals. Once a month, you will receive The Toastmaster magazine full of helpful articles on improving your speech projects, leadership opportunities, member success stories, as well as information about upcoming events like the annual World Championship of Public Speaking. The Toastmaster is a greater source for all members, so be sure to take a look through each issue. Each new member is also given a copy of the "The Toastmasters Promise" which helps set the expectations for you as a member:
*Toastmasters International dues are $US54 per year per club. In addition, there is a one-time New Member Kit Fee of $US20 to cover materials shipped from Toastmasters International. Due to meeting facility costs and/or additional member programs and materials, some clubs also have Club Dues. Be sure to ask about Club Dues when visiting a Toastmasters club. | |
